About Swissfluent

Switzerland is incredible.
But setting up a life there? That needs a guide.

Whether you just landed at Zurich airport with two suitcases, or you've been here for years and still feel like you're figuring it out, you're not alone.

Navigating life in Switzerland can be genuinely hard. The bureaucracy, the competitive housing market, the unwritten social rules, the German and the Swiss German. The feeling that sometimes everyone around you seems to have some insider tips that you never got. We often hear this from expats, from every corner of the world, at every stage of their Swiss journey.

We've been there.

👋 Hi, we're Jvan and Justin - the faces behind Swissfluent. Together, we bring something rare: the expat and the insider perspectives, in the same place.

Justin moved to Switzerland 15 years ago and has lived the full expat experience firsthand. The work and residence permit maze, the apartment hunt, opening a bank account as a US citizen (a special challenge), and learning High German only to discover that Swiss German (Schwiizerdütsch) is its own adventure entirely. He's learned from making many mistakes as a foreigner, found the shortcuts that work, and built a life here that he has come to love. It has not always been easy, but it has been worth it.

Jvan grew up near Zurich and has spent years watching friends arrive from abroad full of excitement, but only to then quietly struggle with things Swiss people take completely for granted. He's become something of a translator: not just of language, but of culture, mindset, and the subtle social dynamics that make Switzerland unique.

What we cover

Swissfluent is a place for practical resources, honest guides, and a growing community that helps you spend less time surviving your Swiss experience and more time thriving in it. We go beyond the “best weekend hiking tips” that you've already seen a hundred times in your social media feed. Instead, you can expect to find practical, honest resources on Swiss daily life from real people who have lived it from both sides.

The topics we focus on:

  • 🇨🇭 Swiss culture & social integration — the unwritten rules, the social codes, and how to actually feel at home here
  • 🗣️ Swiss German — because High German will only get you so far
  • 📋 Permits, bureaucracy & admin — residence permits, taxes, rental rules, and the paperwork no one warned you about
  • 🏠 The Swiss housing market — one of the most competitive in the world, demystified
  • 🏦 Banking & finances — opening accounts, navigating Swiss financial life, and the extra complexity if you're a US citizen
  • ☀️ Daily life in Switzerland — from getting around to finding your rhythm here

Help us build Swissfluent the right way 🙏

We're at the beginning of this, and we want to build it around what you actually need. We have a short survey to help us understand what challenges matter most to you right now.

It only takes a few minutes, and you can even win an SBB gift card to buy Swiss train tickets as a thank you (maybe that's enough to convince you to fill it out?). Your answers will directly shape what we build first.
